Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the US, Iran, and their allies had agreed to a comprehensive ceasefire following Pakistan’s mediation efforts. This two-week truce, initially announced by Trump and Tehran, is set to progress to talks in the Pakistani capital.
Renowned South Asia expert Michael Kugelman hailed Pakistan’s diplomatic success, emphasizing the country’s ability to achieve a complex and high-stakes feat despite skepticism. Pakistan’s former ambassador to Tehran, Asif Durrani, highlighted the nation’s unique position as the only regional country with strong ties to both the US and Iran, citing historical, cultural, and religious connections along with a shared border of 900 kilometers.
Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s influential army chief, has cultivated a personal relationship with US President Donald Trump, which played a pivotal role in easing tensions between Pakistan and India over Kashmir. Trump acknowledged Pakistan’s understanding of Iran, emphasizing the importance of personal relations in shaping bilateral ties amid shifting strategic interests.
While Pakistan maintains close relations with Saudi Arabia and China, recent diplomatic efforts have focused on de-escalating conflicts in the Middle East. Pakistan’s neutrality in the region is driven by economic considerations, aiming to safeguard fuel supplies and avoid further conflict near its borders. A permanent resolution to the Middle East conflict would enhance regional stability and bolster Pakistan’s international reputation amid ongoing conflicts with neighboring Afghanistan and India.
Looking ahead, Pakistan is poised to host US and Iranian delegations in the capital starting April 10 to further negotiations. With its expertise in mediation, Pakistan is positioned to assist the two sides in resolving remaining differences.
