OpenAI has officially announced the discontinuation of its Sora video platform, a tool that enabled users to create and share AI-generated video clips.
The team responsible for the product expressed the difficulty of the decision to bid farewell to the Sora app in a post on X, thanking all users who contributed, shared content, and formed a community around it. They acknowledged the disappointment this news may bring, emphasizing the impact of the creations made using Sora.
This move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategic shift, as the company focuses its computing power and engineering resources on enterprise tools and coding products in preparation for a potential stock market listing later this year, as reported by Reuters.
Initially gaining recognition in early 2024 for its capability to produce high-quality cinematic videos based on simple text inputs, Sora evolved into a standalone app in September 2025, featuring a social feed for users to showcase their work. The platform was utilized for various purposes, including crafting short films, animated sequences, and reimagining scenes from popular movies and TV series.
According to Reuters, this decision also marks the end of a proposed $1 billion collaboration with Disney, which was disclosed three months ago. The envisioned partnership, intended to span three years, would have involved Disney investing in OpenAI and permitting over 200 of its characters to be featured in AI-generated videos. However, insiders revealed that the deal did not materialize, with no financial transactions taking place.
The announcement came swiftly after OpenAI had released safety guidelines for the platform, with some members of the Sora team reportedly being unaware of the decision until the day of the announcement, according to sources cited in the Reuters report.
In their official communication on X, the company assured users of forthcoming details on how to preserve their existing work and outlined timelines for the platform’s closure.
