A man with cognitive challenges, renowned for confronting minor crimes in the local marketplace, was tragically killed in the Mirerhat region of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram today. Belal Hossain was discovered deceased, wrapped in a blanket and surrounded by a pool of blood, bearing significant injuries.
The incident is presumed to have taken place during the early hours of Sunday, with authorities suspecting that the victim was attacked with wooden logs while asleep, resulting in a fatal head trauma.
According to police and local informants, Belal was a well-known presence in the marketplace. A source, preferring anonymity, shared with The Daily Star that Belal was well-acquainted with everyone in the market, often spending nights there, vocally patrolling the area with the night guard. The source suggested that Belal may have been targeted and murdered due to his efforts to thwart criminal activities.
Mujibur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Model Police Station, verified the incident, stating, “Our initial suspicion is that Belal was killed in his sleep. The body has been recovered and sent to Chittagong Medical College for a post-mortem examination.” The OC mentioned that the authorities are in the process of filing a case related to the incident.
