Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps initiated a series of military drills in the narrow and strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as per reports from state media. The Guards’ naval forces were engaged in intensive exercises overseen by the IRGC’s leader, in response to the recent deployment of a significant US naval presence in the Gulf.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has landed in Geneva ahead of upcoming negotiations with the United States, confirmed Iranian state television. The talks, facilitated by Oman and described as “indirect” by Tehran, are scheduled for today. While the US has expressed interest in discussing Iran’s ballistic missiles and regional support, Iran is focused on addressing its enriched uranium stockpile, last inspected by nuclear watchdog officials in June.
An Iranian diplomat emphasized the potential for a mutually beneficial nuclear agreement with the US during recent statements. Economic benefits in various sectors like oil, gas, joint fields, mining investments, and aircraft acquisitions are believed to be part of the negotiation agenda.
Abbas Araghchi, leading the Iranian delegation, is poised for discussions in Geneva, including technical talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s head, Rafael Grossi. Additionally, meetings with Swiss and Omani counterparts and other international officials are on the agenda.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked during a visit to Budapest that reaching a deal with Iran would pose significant challenges.
