“NCP Representative Accuses BNP of Deceptive Court Challenge”

-

The National Citizen Party (NCP) representative Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of engaging in a deceptive strategy by challenging the validity of the July Charter in court. Speaking at a media briefing held at the NCP’s office in Banglamotor, he emphasized that commencing the new parliamentary session with what he referred to as the ‘last remnants of fascism’ should not be allowed. Asif warned that if the court invalidates the July Charter, both the Parliament and the government could face dissolution since the elections were conducted based on this charter.

He highlighted a recent statement made by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed regarding the reported challenge to the July Charter in court by certain groups. Asif questioned whether the minister was merely informed about the legal proceedings or if the government had a role in instigating them.

Asif urged the government to refrain from using the court as a shield for political motives. He called upon the ruling party members to pledge allegiance to the Constitutional Reform Council before the upcoming parliamentary session. Criticizing the government’s preference for constitutional amendments over a complete rewrite of the Constitution, Asif alleged that historical alterations to the Constitution have served party interests and claimed that the current administration is continuing this trend through selective reforms.

Furthermore, Asif demanded the removal of the president and objected to the commencement of the parliamentary session with a presidential address. Separately, the NCP Convener Nahid Islam accused an ongoing effort to politicize the judiciary and restore partisanship within it. He reiterated that the current government was established based on the public endorsement of the July Charter and the referendum, cautioning against manipulating the court for political gains and emphasizing the potential serious repercussions of using the judiciary to advance a partisan agenda.

Nahid stressed the necessity to renew efforts for judicial reform, combating corruption, and hegemony. He made these remarks as the chief guest at an iftar event organized by the NCP in Chattogram’s Panchlaish area, signaling a continued commitment to these causes.
