New Zealand’s cricket team has announced Henry Nicholls as the replacement for the recently retired Kane Williamson in the upcoming second Test against England.
Williamson bid farewell to his esteemed international career following New Zealand’s loss in the first Test at Lord’s earlier this month. Black Caps’ skipper, Tom Latham, disclosed that Nicholls has been selected over Will Young to step into the challenging role vacated by Williamson, who holds the record as New Zealand’s top run scorer in all formats.
Having last played in a Test match against Zimbabwe 11 months ago, the 34-year-old Nicholls has been entrusted with the crucial number three position, a role he has successfully fulfilled for Canterbury domestically. Latham expressed confidence in Nicholls’ ability to adapt to different scenarios, citing his versatility in batting across various positions during his international career.
The unexpected departure of Williamson in the midst of the series poses a significant setback for New Zealand following their defeat at Lord’s. Nevertheless, Latham emphasized that there are no hard feelings within the team towards the 35-year-old for his decision.
Latham also confirmed that opener Devon Conway is ready to play after briefly returning home between Tests for the birth of his second child. Meanwhile, fast bowler Matt Henry, who was sidelined with back spasms in the previous Test, participated in Tuesday’s net session in a bid to showcase his fitness for the upcoming match.
