Google Agrees to Provide AI Tech for Defense Ops

-

Alphabet’s Google has recently entered into an agreement with the US Department of Defense to provide its artificial intelligence technology for classified operations, as reported by The Information. This deal allows the Pentagon to utilize Google’s AI capabilities for various government purposes, aligning it with other tech firms like OpenAI and xAI owned by Elon Musk, which have similar arrangements for supplying AI models for classified tasks.

The classified networks are crucial for handling sensitive activities such as mission planning and weapons targeting. The Pentagon has secured agreements with major AI labs, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, worth up to $200 million each in 2025. The goal is to maintain flexibility in defense strategies and not be confined by concerns raised by AI creators about employing unreliable AI in weaponry.

Under the terms of Google’s agreement, the company is obligated to assist in adjusting its AI safety protocols and filters upon the government’s request. While the contract stipulates that the AI system should not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight, it also clarifies that the agreement does not grant control over lawful government operational decisions.

Alphabet and the US Department of Defense, now renamed the Department of War by President Donald Trump, have not yet commented on this development. A spokesperson from Google Public Sector confirmed that the new agreement is an amendment to the existing contract, as per The Information’s report.

Reuters previously highlighted the Pentagon’s efforts to persuade leading AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic to make their tools accessible on classified networks without the usual restrictions.
