“From Stress Relief to Marathon Milestone: Dr. Shabab’s Transformative Journey”

-

Dr. Chowdhury Rashaad Shabab’s journey from stress relief to marathon success is a testament to the transformative power of running. Initially turning to running as a stress-reliever during his PhD studies at the University of Sussex, it has evolved into a lifelong passion for him. Recently, he achieved a significant milestone by completing his 100th official marathon race, certified by the UK’s 100 Marathon Club.

On May 24, 2026, Dr. Shabab completed his 100th marathon at Ardingly Reservoir in Sussex, amidst the region’s hottest day of the year. Remarkably, he finished in second place overall and clinched the top spot in the male category.

Balancing his roles as a Reader in Economics and Associate Dean for Education and Students at the University of Sussex Business School, Dr. Shabab turned to running to manage academic pressures, family responsibilities, and to quit smoking during his doctoral studies. Viewing running as a form of rejuvenation, he emphasizes the importance of enjoyment in his approach, advocating for the gradual development of sustainable habits over drastic changes.

In addition to his marathon achievements, Dr. Shabab made history as the first Bangladeshi to complete a 100-mile footrace, reshaping his perspective on overcoming challenges. He believes that endurance activities like running can enhance discipline, focus, and emotional resilience, benefitting academic pursuits. Dr. Shabab has also fostered academic and professional connections through running, emphasizing its positive impact on his life.

Furthermore, Dr. Shabab’s dedication to his 100th marathon extended beyond personal accomplishment, as he raised funds for the University of Sussex hardship fund, supporting students facing financial difficulties. Drawing from his own experiences as an international student, he highlights the importance of cultivating healthy habits to enhance academic success.

Encouraging aspiring runners, Dr. Shabab emphasizes consistent training, balanced nutrition, and enjoying the journey. Alongside his marathon achievements, he co-authored a notable publication, ‘Statistics for Economics, Accounting and Business Studies’, reflecting his academic prowess.

Dr. Shabab’s story serves as a poignant reminder that success is not solely about pushing oneself to the limit. By prioritizing health and wellness, individuals can excel in various aspects of life, including work, family, and personal growth.
