An explosion at a fireworks store in eastern China resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and injuries to two others, authorities confirmed on Sunday evening. The incident occurred in Jiangsu province’s Donghai county around 2:30 pm local time, attributed to the improper handling of fireworks by villagers celebrating upcoming holidays, such as the Lunar New Year.
Responding promptly, emergency management, fire, public security, and health authorities quickly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. By 4:00 pm, the fire caused by the explosion was under control. While eight individuals lost their lives, two individuals sustained minor burn injuries.
Authorities have detained those responsible for the incident as investigations are ongoing. The Ministry of Emergency Management cautioned the public as the Lunar New Year approached, emphasizing the importance of safe fireworks practices. A nationwide notice was issued to fireworks companies to conduct thorough safety inspections to prevent similar accidents.
Tragically, industrial accidents are not uncommon in China, primarily due to insufficient safety regulations. Earlier this month, eight individuals died in an explosion at a biotech factory in Shanxi province, while a steel factory explosion in Inner Mongolia claimed the lives of at least nine people in late January.
