Gunfire resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left one person injured in a residence at a historically Black university located in the southern United States on Thursday. This incident marked the third shooting on the campus since October. The United States, known for its widespread availability of firearms, has a troubling history of gun violence that claims thousands of lives annually.
The shooting occurred at the Hugine Suites student residential complex within South Carolina State University and was reported at approximately 9:15 pm on Thursday (0215 GMT Friday) according to the college’s statement. ABC News mentioned that the university had experienced two previous shootings in October, with one incident occurring at the same student housing facility, resulting in one fatality and one injury.
In a social media update early the following day, the university stated, “University officials have not yet confirmed the victims’ identities or the condition of the wounded person. The campus remains on lockdown.” While school authorities did not disclose information regarding any suspects in custody related to the shooting, they did announce the cancellation of classes for the day.
