Gaza’s health ministry confirmed the reception of 30 bodies of Palestinians killed by Israel from the Red Cross, following Hamas’ delivery of two hostage bodies. As part of the ceasefire agreement, Hamas freed all living hostages in Gaza in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees, while Israel committed to withdraw its troops, cease its offensive, and boost aid.
In addition to releasing the living hostages, Hamas agreed to surrender the remains of the 28 deceased hostages in return for 360 Palestinians who lost their lives in the conflict. As of the recent release, 17 bodies have been handed over, with a total of 225 Palestinian bodies returned to Gaza thus far. Hamas emphasized the need for more time to locate and recover the remaining hostage bodies, while Israel has accused the group of breaching the ceasefire by delaying the handover process.
The Gaza health authorities reported that the two-year conflict in Gaza has resulted in the death of over 68,000 Palestinians and left the region severely damaged. The war was initiated by Israel following attacks by Hamas fighters on southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the return of 251 hostages to Gaza.
