Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid, who was working under a contract, has submitted his resignation. In a conversation with The Daily Star last evening, he mentioned that he had informed the government of his decision to step down before the elections, and it has now been put into effect. However, Rashid chose not to disclose the specific reason for his resignation.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Public Administration released a notification yesterday assigning M Siraz Uddin Miah, the principal secretary to the chief adviser, with the additional responsibility of cabinet secretary. Earlier, Rashid’s contract had been terminated by the ministry.
As the highest-ranking official in the country, the cabinet secretary supervises the entire process of the new government’s inauguration and is in charge of organizing the swearing-in ceremony. His resignation, just two days before the new government assumes office, has left many within the administration surprised.
Following Muhammad Yunus’s interim government assuming power, Rashid was appointed as the secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division on a contractual basis. He was later appointed as the cabinet secretary on a two-year contract on October 14, 2024.
