BBC Father Brown release date, returning cast and episode count as series 12 confirmed

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Father Brown.

BBC Father Brown season 12 is on the horizon so exactly when will it be released and who is to star?

It’s been close to a year since Father Brown last aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer and the grand finale which saw Chief Inspector Sullivan (played by Tom Chambers) propose to Mrs Devine (Claudie Blakley) at last.

Of course, when the cosy crime drama does return, Roman Catholic priest Father Brown (Mark Williams) is expected to resume his duties and investigate the latest goings on in the 1950s-set village as the wedding preparations are underway.

The wait is almost over for season 12 to begin with Father Brown returning on Friday, January 10, at 2pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Consisting of 10 episodes like previous series, filming for season 12 began in April last year with fans also now treated to the exciting news that Father Brown has already been renewed for a 13th outing.

Actor Mark Williams, who is behind the titular priest himself, is back for season 12, but away from the BBC drama, he is probably best known for playing Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise.

Williams will once again be joined by former Casualty star Tom Chambers as Chief Inspector Sullivan and Lark Rise to Candleford’s Claudie Blakley as Mrs Devine.

Actress Ruby-May Martinwood and actor John Burton are also set to reprise their roles as Brenda and Sergeant Goodfellow respectively.

There are to be a couple of new additions to the cast with Father Brown’s “biggest fan” in Father Lindsey, portrayed by Two Doors Down star Kieran Hodgson.

A “brand new nemesis” is also to be on the scene but casting has so far remained under wraps for this character.

An official synopsis for season 12 has been released ahead of the new series’ debut.

It reads: “Following the exciting proposal at the end of series 11, the sleepy village of Kembleford is abuzz with good news, as Mrs Devine and Chief Inspector Sullivan look forward to their upcoming wedding.

“But when a surprise visit from the father of the groom quickly throws preparations into turmoil, will they even make it to the church?”

The description then continues: “With a medieval death at a Tudor battle reenactment, Mrs Devine finding herself accused of murder, Sergeant Goodfellow’s professional future thrown into question and Brenda ballroom dancing on national television, Father Brown and the gang are busier than ever.

“And when a cardinal from the Vatican arrives with a top-secret mission for Father Brown, the priest must request the help of his old adversary Flambeau, while a new nemesis lurks in the shadows.”

Father Brown season 12 premieres on Friday, January 10, at 2pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
