Gavin & Stacey cast left ‘gasping’ after unexpected bombshell at read-through

The cast of Gavin & Stacey “gasped” in shock when one part of the finale script was revealed.

Last week, the nation was gripped as they eagerly awaited to find out what happened after Nessa (Ruth Jones) proposed to Smithy (James Corden) at the end of the Christmas special in 2019. But while fans knew that the grand finale was coming in 2024 – they had no idea what to expect.

And it wasn’t just fans who were kept in the dark. Five years on as wedding prep got underway, it emerged that Sonia was his bride to be. The episode which raked in over 12.3 million viewers instantly became a hit with fans who were left wiping away their tears. The Mirror previously revealed that Laura Aikman’s character of Sonia was not included in the script, leaving her co-stars speechless when it emerged that Lauren Cornelius would be playing her bridesmaid, Annie.

But London-born Lauren also revealed one aspect of the episode which left the cast letting out an audible gasp at the read through. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, she said of the read through: “There was honestly not a dry eye in the whole of the room.” It was just but I tell you, the biggest gasp that happened, the biggest shock was Gwen and Dave Coaches.

“All the cast at the table just went ‘oh my GOD!’ that was a huge twist, I would have never have thought about that one, it took everyone by surprise, it was a brilliant twist.” Lauren, who has also appeared on Call The Midwife went on to add: “That was a huge gasp moment, it was so cool to be part of that reveal. You had all the cast, crew, costume and wardrobe but you had all the BBC big execs in there as well, it was fantastic. To be with everyone hearing it and hearing that shock twist for the first time.”

During dramatic twist, Stacey’s mum, Gwen, revealed that she had secretly been dating Nessa’s ex, Dave Coaches for several months, leaving Stacey and her brother Jason stunned, while Nessa remained relaxed. But unbeknownst to Gwen, Stacey had already texted her paternal uncle, Bryn to deliver the news.

Seconds later, Uncle Bryn, played by Rob Brydon came bursting in through the back door, lashing out at Dave for having his brother’s “scraps” following his death. “Bryn’s reaction was priceless,” Lauren laughed. She went on to laugh: “I loved how he came in, the outfit, oh my goodness, the way Rob delivered the ‘rat’ line – he just spat it at him, it was so funny.”

Bryn’s resentment towards Dave came to an end at the end of the episode, when he helped reunite Nessa and Smithy at Portsmouth Docks and enabled them to marry one another. Lauren, who grew up watching the BBC sitcom went on to say: “I feel like they really did it justice. The reaction has been incredible, and it’s so well deserved, because they tied it up beautifully. They gave the people what we wanted. I think in this day and age, there’s so many endings of long running series that are just hopelessly disappointing.

“And you just think, ‘Why did they do that?’ But this one, I have no notes. It was just as a fan. As someone that’s grown up watching the show and grown with these characters, it ended perfectly. I was sobbing. It was just so good.”

Lauren’s character was so secret, Corden and Jones gave her several names throughout the audition process. “It was Katie first, then it was Leticia, and then it was Anna,” she said. “It was totally wild, it was surreal in itself, it was absolutely incredible,” she commented, before adding that she had an agonising four day wait to find out if she had bagged the role. After being told by her agent, Lauren screamed with her mum, sister and their dog before “crying.”

But while she looks back with fond memories, Lauren admits she’s spent the past four months “completely stressed” thinking she would accidentally leak the bombshell. Fans first saw her during Sonia’s formal hen do, with her bridesmaids taking part in a “Mr & Mrs quiz,” grilling the bride to be.

“It was so nicely done, how both the hen and stag didn’t work out in the way everyone wanted it to go, it really added to the end of the episode, it wasn’t right for either of them but it’s really nice to be a part of.”
