Bangladesh’s Middle-Order Collapse Leads to T20I Loss

-

Bangladesh’s pace-bowling coach, Talha Jubair, acknowledged that the team’s inability to establish partnerships in the middle-order following quick dismissals led to a below-par total, resulting in a four-wicket loss to Australia in the first T20I at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on Wednesday.

The Bangladeshi team made a decent start with the bat initially, but both Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Saif Hassan fell to poor shots on a slightly challenging pitch. Despite scoring 52 runs for the loss of two wickets in the powerplay, a familiar collapse occurred as they lost five wickets for 34 runs in just 34 deliveries.

Adam Zampa and Joel Davies took advantage of this phase, dismantling the innings by dismissing Tawhid Hridoy, Soumya Sarkar, and Parvez Hossain Emon.

“We rushed ourselves a bit. Although we had a good start in the Powerplay, we couldn’t capitalize on it,” remarked Talha Jubair during the post-match press conference.

“If we had built partnerships of 30–40 runs, we could have stabilized the innings. We were aware that it wasn’t a pitch for scoring 200 runs, but our batters got carried away after the promising start when they started connecting shots.”

Bangladesh’s batsmen overlooked the impact of the wind, which Australia exploited effectively. Soumya and Emon attempted big hits but failed to clear the boundary, being dismissed for 17 and 10 respectively.

“The shot Emon played would have been a huge six in normal conditions, but the wind held it back, and the ball didn’t go over the fielder,” Jubair pointed out.

“We fell into their strategy. They wanted us to hit against the wind and mistime our shots. It required sensible batting, but we lost wickets in succession.”

Despite Mahedi Hasan’s unbeaten 29 off 22 deliveries, Bangladesh was bowled out for 131 in 19 overs, regretting not utilizing their full quota of overs.

Australian debutant Davies, who took three wickets alongside Zampa, revealed that they indeed executed a planned strategy.

“With the wind blowing towards the longer boundary, Mitchell [Marsh] suggested making them hit into it. I managed to pick up two wickets using that tactic, so it worked out well,” Davies explained.
