The recent physical assault and harassment of Bangladesh spinner Nayeem Hasan by police officers in Chattogram have sparked outrage from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), and many national cricketers. The incident occurred when Nayeem was stopped by police near Lalkhan Bazar on his way home to Chattogram after a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match in Savar.
According to a press release from CWAB, the police behaved aggressively towards Nayeem, with officers allegedly grabbing him by the throat and beating him with a pipe despite bystanders identifying him as a national cricketer. Nayeem was then taken to Khulshi Police Station where he faced further mistreatment before seeking help.
CWAB denounced the incident as unacceptable and extended full support to Nayeem, with the organization’s President Mohammad Mithun assuring the cricketer of solidarity from all players in the country. The BCB also expressed deep concern over the reported assault, categorizing the treatment towards the player as “unacceptable and inappropriate.”
The BCB called for a thorough investigation into the matter and demanded appropriate action against those responsible. The board affirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and rights of all players and stated ongoing support for Nayeem and his family. National cricketers, including Litton Das and Parvez Hossain Emon, also condemned the incident, emphasizing the need for justice and fair treatment.
Videos circulating on social media captured Nayeem detailing the alleged misconduct and assault by police officers. Despite the ordeal, Nayeem, who has represented Bangladesh in international matches, remains a key player in the upcoming Test against Zimbabwe. With a track record of 300 wickets in first-class cricket, Nayeem’s talent and dedication to the sport are widely acknowledged.
