Bangladesh Opposition Leader Raises Law and Order Concerns to EU Mission

-

Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman voiced apprehension regarding the nation’s law and order scenario to the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) today. The opposition leader engaged in a cordial meeting with a prominent EU EOM delegation at his office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this afternoon, as per a party statement. The delegation, led by Chief Observer Ivars Ijabs and comprising Deputy Head of Delegation Baiba Zarina, Deputy Chief Observer Inta Leis, Legal Analyst Irini Maria Gounari, and Ryan Islam, interacted with Rahman.

At the commencement of the meeting, Ijabs commended the opposition leader’s constructive role. The EU EOM provided Rahman with its assessment report on Bangladesh’s recent parliamentary elections during the meeting. The visiting EU representatives inquired about the status of implementing the July Charter. In response, the opposition leader outlined his party’s positions on key matters such as the national election and the referendum proposal.

Rahman highlighted that while the BNP had initially agreed to various reform suggestions at the National Consensus Commission, it later exhibited reluctance in executing them. He cautioned that such a scenario could diminish public trust in political leadership. Discussions also touched on concerns raised by Rahman regarding violent incidents involving ruling party supporters in different regions, unrest at multiple universities, and assaults on Jamaat lawmakers.

EU EOM members stressed the necessity to fortify democracy, ensure political equilibrium, and undertake essential reforms in Bangladesh. They presented a series of recommendations geared towards ensuring forthcoming elections are conducted freely and fairly. Barrister Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, MP from Dhaka-14, and Ali Ahmad Mabroor, a member of the opposition leader’s foreign affairs advisory team, attended the meeting.

Earlier in the day, the EU EOM labeled Bangladesh’s 2026 parliamentary elections as “credible” and “competently managed,” marking a pivotal stride towards reinstating democratic governance and the rule of law. Chief Observer Ivars Ijabs, while unveiling the mission’s final report at a hotel in Dhaka this morning, mentioned that the polls were genuinely competitive for the first time since 2008, with fundamental freedoms being widely respected.
