A sports comedy-drama film starring Aamir Khan is set to premiere on SonyLIV after a year of its theatrical release. Titled “Sitaare Zameen Par,” the movie initially hit cinemas in June 2025 before being offered on Khan’s YouTube channel through a pay-per-view model at a price of approximately Rs 100 per view.
Directed by R S Prasanna, the film is the official Hindi adaptation of the Spanish movie “Champions.” In this version, Khan plays Gulshan Arora, an assistant coach of a professional basketball team whose life takes a dramatic turn following job loss and involvement in a drunk-driving incident. The ensuing legal repercussions lead him on a transformative journey of self-discovery.
The decision to independently release the film on YouTube was explained by Khan as an attempt to explore a novel distribution strategy that enhances accessibility to viewers. He likened the move to having his own personal cinema chain, making films easily accessible to audiences at home and on the go. Khan expressed a preference for earning directly from viewers rather than opting for traditional upfront deals with OTT platforms.
Apart from Khan, the film also stars Genelia Deshmukh, Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Varma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshkar, Samvit Desai, and Naman Misra.
After a successful theatrical run nationwide, “Sitaare Zameen Par” emerged as a blockbuster, reportedly grossing over Rs 250 crore at the box office.
