“Trump Calls for Negotiations with Iran to Prevent Nuclear Weapons”

-

US President Donald Trump suggested that Iran could reach out for negotiations to end their ongoing conflict and emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. This statement came after Iran urged the US to address obstacles hindering a potential agreement, such as the blockade of Iranian ports. Efforts to restart peace talks faced setbacks when Trump canceled a visit by his envoys to Islamabad. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi engaged in diplomatic discussions with mediators from Pakistan and Oman before proceeding to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Following the stalled peace talks, oil prices saw an increase, the dollar strengthened slightly, and US stock futures showed a slight decline during early Asia trading on Monday. Trump expressed openness to dialogue, stating that Iran could initiate contact through secure communication channels for negotiations. He emphasized that any agreement with Iran must include provisions preventing the development of nuclear weapons.

Reports indicated that Iran presented a new proposal through Pakistani mediators, focusing on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resolving the conflict while postponing discussions on nuclear issues. Iran has consistently pushed for the recognition of its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, a stance disputed by Western powers concerned about potential weaponization.

Despite a ceasefire halting major hostilities since the conflict’s outbreak in February, no consensus has been reached on terms to end the war, which has resulted in casualties, economic disruptions, and global uncertainty. Trump is under pressure domestically to conclude the conflict amid declining approval ratings. Iran’s strategic control over the vital Strait of Hormuz has provided leverage in negotiations, as the region’s oil supply routes remain at risk due to the ongoing tensions.

Araqchi’s diplomatic efforts included discussions on regional security and transit agreements with officials from Oman and Pakistan. The focus was on establishing a legal framework for the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring compensation, preventing military aggression, and lifting naval blockades. Iranian envoy Kazem Jalali highlighted the collaboration between Iran and Russia in promoting their shared interests against external threats.

Trump justified the cancellation of the envoys’ visit citing excessive costs and insufficient progress in the negotiations. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s stance on not engaging in negotiations under duress or blockades, emphasizing the need for the US to remove obstacles before meaningful dialogue can commence. The disagreements between the US and Iran extend beyond nuclear issues to regional influence and missile capabilities.

The conflict has led to heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Iran engaging in hostilities with Gulf neighbors and supporting proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas. The US seeks to limit Iran’s regional activities, while Iran demands the lifting of sanctions and an end to Israeli attacks on Hezbollah. The cancellation of the diplomatic mission led to the departure of US security personnel and equipment from Pakistan.

Trump remarked on internal divisions within Iran’s leadership, while Iranian officials maintained a united front behind the supreme leader. The ongoing conflict has had repercussions across the region, with renewed hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah resulting in casualties in Lebanon.
