“Transforming the Narrative: Addressing Suicide Stigma in Bangladesh”

-

More than 40 individuals take their own lives daily in Bangladesh. Over the period from 2020 to 2024, a total of 76,361 suicides were officially recorded, resulting in more than 15,000 deaths annually. Despite these alarming statistics, suicide is not commonly discussed as a significant public health issue in the country. Instead, the conversation often shifts towards personal and moral inquiries following a suicide, focusing on reasons behind the act, family reactions, and the perceived impact on family honor. This leads to bereaved families not only dealing with grief but also shouldering a burden of shame.

In Bangladesh, attempting suicide is still considered a criminal offense under Section 309 of the Penal Code, punishable by imprisonment, fines, or both. Despite the high number of daily suicide cases, the prevailing discourse around suicide continues to revolve around themes of shame, morality, family reputation, and criminality rather than prioritizing prevention efforts.

The language used when discussing suicide plays a critical role in shaping how families interpret such events, how communities respond to individuals in distress, and whether those in need feel comfortable seeking help. The current narrative often inadvertently heightens stigma, shame, and isolation surrounding suicide. To effectively prevent suicide, there is a need to not only enhance support services but also to transform the language and societal responses that influence individuals’ willingness to seek help.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that for every suicide, there are more than 20 suicide attempts. Media reporting can either aid or hinder prevention efforts. Sensational reporting, detailing suicide methods, and portraying suicide as a viable solution can increase the risk of imitation. Conversely, stories emphasizing hope, recovery, and overcoming suicidal crises can serve as protective measures.

While altering language is crucial, it alone is not adequate to prevent suicide. A shift in the perception of who bears responsibility for prevention is necessary. Collaboration with community-level stakeholders is essential, as mental health resources are often scarce in countries like Bangladesh. Families and caregivers affected by suicide must overcome stigma to openly discuss their experiences, express regret over missed opportunities for intervention, and acknowledge suicide as a call for help rather than a solution.

Engaging community leaders, including religious figures and individuals with social influence, is vital in promoting open dialogues, destigmatizing help-seeking behaviors, and fostering compassion. Additionally, integrating mental health services into primary healthcare systems and establishing clear referral pathways between community support and professional services are crucial steps.

Encouraging responsible conversations and avoiding sensationalism in media reporting on suicide, as recommended by WHO, can facilitate help-seeking behaviors. Shifting the focus from the act itself to the individual’s life, circumstances, warning signs, and avenues for support is essential. By changing the dialogue surrounding suicide, we can create an environment that prioritizes compassion over judgment and facilitates early intervention to prevent tragedies.

In conclusion, altering the language around suicide is a pivotal aspect of prevention efforts. By initiating conversations that prioritize understanding, support, and recovery, we can contribute to a culture that promotes mental well-being and addresses suicidal behavior effectively.
