Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal units of Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University staged protests last night in response to an alleged attack on JCD members by Shibir activists at Chattogram City College.
At Dhaka University, the student organization affiliated with the ruling party, Chhatra Dal, issued a warning that leaders and members of Islami Chhatra Shibir would face restrictions on campus if similar clashes like the recent one at Chattogram City College occur again.
Multiple individuals sustained injuries in separate altercations between Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir at Chattogram City College on Tuesday.
Accusing Shibir of launching an armed assault on ordinary students, the JCD central committee organized a protest march on Dhaka University campus around 9:00 pm.
During the demonstration, protestors voiced slogans such as “Jamaat-Shibir, Jamaat-Shibir, secret conspirators” and “Break and crush the dens of Jamaat-Shibir.”
The march concluded with a rally at the Raju Memorial Sculpture base.
Speaking to the crowd, JCD Central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir stated, “If you attempt to replicate such assaults on any Bangladesh campus… If you have the audacity to do so… Not a single JCD member will permit your free movement on campuses.”
He alleged that Shibir activists have assaulted JCD leaders and members multiple times in Chattogram since August 5. “They engage in duplicitous and aggressive politics.”
“We will resist violent politics alongside regular students,” he added.
Nasir also criticized Shibir’s historical political activities and questioned the stance of Jamaat leaders in light of recent political events.
JCD Dhaka University unit President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos claimed that Islami Chhatra Shibir is propagating a “negative narrative” and inciting unrest on campuses.
“This is not the government of Dr. Muhammad Yunus; this is the government of Tarique Rahman, the statesman who devised the 31-point agenda,” he remarked.
On Tuesday night, the JCD unit at Jahangirnagar University initiated a protest march from Rabindranath Tagore Hall on campus, parading through key campus roads before concluding with a brief rally in front of Shaheed Salam Barkat Hall.
Approximately 150 leaders and members participated in the event.
During the march, participants chanted slogans like “Zia’s soldiers, unite..Unite…”, “There will be no place for covert politics in this nation”, and “Break and crush the malevolent actions of Shibir criminals.”
JU JCD Convener Jahir Uddin Mohammad Babor, Member Secretary Wasim Ahmed Anik, and other leaders and members were present at the rally.
Addressing the attendees, Babor remarked, “Since the mass uprising on August 5, we have been tirelessly striving to promote inclusive and student-friendly politics on campus. However, our patience should not be mistaken for weakness. The brutal attack by Chhatra Shibir at [Chattogram] City College today is highly reprehensible.”
He warned that if Islami Chhatra Shibir did not forsake “clandestine and violent politics”, JCD would initiate a robust movement alongside regular students.
“Any efforts to disrupt the campus will be met with strong resistance,” he emphasized.
