The government has appointed Md Ali Hossain Fakir, who is currently serving as the Additional Inspector General of Police and Chief of the Armed Police Battalion, as the new Inspector General of Police. This announcement was made by the home ministry through an official notification, replacing Baharul Alam, who had been working as the IGP on a contract basis since November 20, 2024.
Ali, a member of the 15th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) cadre, had previously faced forced retirement in the interest of the public on November 16, 2022, while leading the Armed Police Battalion-3 under the previous Awami League government. However, he was reinstated by the interim government on August 27, 2024, along with four other officers. Subsequently, in August 2025, he was promoted from deputy inspector general to supernumerary additional inspector general of police.
Having entered the Bangladesh Police force in 1995 as an assistant superintendent of police after passing the 15th BCS examination, Ali holds academic qualifications including a BCom (Honours) in Management, MCom, and MBA degrees from Dhaka University. He is currently serving as the acting president of the Police Service Association and was associated with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal during his university years, as per accounts from student leaders of that time.
Throughout his career spanning close to three decades, Ali has held various key positions such as deputy police commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and superintendent of police in Netrokona, Feni, and Magura, along with his duties in the Armed Police Battalion. Additionally, he has participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Ivory Coast and has undertaken training and official assignments in several countries, including the US and China.
