Qatar Stuns Switzerland with Late Goal in World Cup Draw

-

Qatar’s Boualem Khoukhi surprised Switzerland with a late goal to secure a 1-1 draw in their initial World Cup match on Saturday. Switzerland had taken the lead with a Breel Embolo penalty early in the first half in the San Francisco Bay Area, but Qatar capitalized on the favorites’ missed opportunities to clinch their first World Cup point.

Qatar, making only their second World Cup appearance after hosting the 2022 tournament, showed signs of rustiness due to the cancellation of two warm-up friendlies in the wake of conflicts in the Middle East. Their encounter with Switzerland marked only their third match since December last year.

Switzerland dominated most of the game, recording 26 shots, while the 35-year-old Khoukhi’s header in injury time brought jubilation to the Qatar team. The match also marked a significant moment for their coach Julen Lopetegui, who managed his first World Cup match after an eventful past where he was dismissed from coaching Spain before the 2018 World Cup.

Despite Switzerland’s aim to progress to the knockout stages for the fourth consecutive World Cup, their failure to convert numerous opportunities will be a concern for coach Murat Yakin. The game saw Manuel Akanji miss an early chance for Qatar, but Switzerland gained momentum with Embolo’s penalty.

As the match progressed under the scorching California sun, both teams struggled to create clear chances. However, Khoukhi’s late goal secured the draw for Qatar, frustrating Switzerland’s efforts.

Switzerland’s next match is against Bosnia in Los Angeles, while Qatar will face Canada in Vancouver on the same day.
