The annual Dol Purnima celebration at the Chheuriya Akhrabari shrine in Kushtia, honoring Bengali mystic poet Lalon Shah, also known as Lalon Fakir or Shahji, commences today, March 2. Despite adjustments due to Ramadan, the event is attracting Baul singers, devotees, and spiritual enthusiasts.
Traditionally spanning three days with music, discussions, and a bustling rural fair, this year’s festival has been condensed to two days. Cultural performances and the fair have been put on hold. The focus will now be on spiritual dialogues, religious practices, and welcoming visiting Bauls.
The event, supported by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the district administration, will officially conclude at noon on Tuesday, March 3, as per acting caretaker Mashiur Rahman. Devotees began arriving days in advance, engaging in Lalon songs and philosophical exchanges across the shrine compound, setting the tone for the annual gathering.
Despite Ramadan expectations leading to smaller crowds, participants arrived early. The ritual proceedings include Gurukarya this evening, followed by the Rakhial service and midnight Adhibash. The Balya service is scheduled for dawn tomorrow, culminating in the Purna service at noon.
Security measures have been reinforced around the shrine, with CCTV surveillance in place as confirmed by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Farzana Akhtar. Police, Ansar personnel, village police, and volunteer teams will be on duty. Medical support has been organized to aid visiting devotees.
