Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, emphasized that the country’s foreign policy will be based on principles of independence, sovereignty, non-interference, mutual benefit, and national dignity. Speaking to reporters at the foreign ministry, he expressed the intention to foster strong relationships with friendly nations worldwide and in the region.
He mentioned that Bangladesh is committed to resolving bilateral issues with respect and mutual understanding, ensuring the protection of national interests. Dr. Rahman noted the positive reception from foreign diplomats towards the new government and their eagerness to collaborate closely with Dhaka.
Notable diplomats, including US Ambassador Brent Christensen, European Union Ambassador Michael Miller, and ambassadors from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden, recently met with Dr. Rahman. Additionally, ambassadors from India, China, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan held discussions with the Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam.
Dr. Rahman expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to pursue an active foreign policy based on his interactions with various ambassadors. He also mentioned that US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, Paul Kapur, is scheduled to visit Bangladesh in early March, following discussions during the US envoy’s meeting with Dr. Rahman.
The discussions emphasized the enduring partnership between the US and Bangladesh, focusing on trade, investment, defence, security, development, and immigration. The EU Ambassador, Michael Miller, encouraged the continuation of reforms by the new government, particularly in the judiciary, commercial courts, and migration management, to enhance EU-Bangladesh relations.
Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen assured Prime Minister Tarique Rahman of China’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s sovereignty, national unity, and independence. Both sides discussed bilateral relations, the Rohingya crisis, and mutual cooperation on international and regional issues of interest.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam reiterated Bangladesh’s support for the Saarc process and collaboration with member states for peace, stability, and prosperity in South Asia during a meeting with Saarc Secretary General Golam Sarwar.
