The Information and Broadcasting Minister, Zahir Uddin Swapan, accused certain groups of covertly supporting mob actions, while Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee urged all parties to refrain from what he described as “mob justice.” Swapan made these comments during a discussion and award ceremony commemorating International Mother Language Day at the Barishal Shilpakala Academy auditorium. The event, organized by the district administration and chaired by Divisional Commissioner and City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, highlighted concerns about some individuals endorsing mob behavior behind the scenes.
“We have taken on the responsibility of governing, possessing a wealth of information and a commitment to accountability to the people,” Swapan stated, emphasizing the government’s dedication to efficient governance under Tarique Rahman’s leadership. He defined “mob” as organized, illegal activities beyond conventional law enforcement agencies and stressed the importance of a free press for a healthy democracy, emphasizing that media freedom must be accompanied by responsibility.
Discussing climate change, Swapan warned of the potential for a significant portion of the country to be submerged underwater within the next few decades, underlining the urgent need for action. He also addressed the family card initiative, revealing plans to gradually include around 4.1 crore families in the program, with distribution commencing shortly.
During a subsequent visit to the Barishal Press Club, Swapan outlined regional development strategies, such as gas transportation from Bhola to Barishal and the expansion of the Bonga-Payra road into a four-lane highway. Meanwhile, Minister Anee highlighted the negative impact of mob culture on Bangladesh’s progress, urging individuals to distance themselves from such behavior and operate responsibly in partnership with the government and the nation.
Anee emphasized the importance of political collaboration, encouraging sincere efforts to advance the country’s development regardless of differing opinions. The minister also addressed the recent parliamentary election and subsequent referendum outcomes, clarifying the procedures and outcomes of the voting process. Legal matters concerning dissenting views were set to be deliberated in parliament, with Anee stressing the need for clear understanding and communication of these issues.
