Bangladesh Internet Users Brace for Slowdowns

-

Reports indicate that internet users in Bangladesh could face slower speeds and temporary disruptions from 10 PM on 9 April to 6 AM on 13 April due to repair activities on the SEA-ME-WE-5 submarine cable linked through Kuakata. While complete internet outage is not expected, there may be instability impacting activities such as video calls, streaming, uploads, and cloud-based work.

Rather than viewing this situation as a technical crisis, it could be beneficial to perceive it as a mandated break. For individuals reliant on internet connectivity, a prudent approach would involve segregating urgent online tasks from non-essential activities. It is advisable to download necessary files preemptively and maintain offline copies of essential documents, spreadsheets, notes, and presentations on personal devices.

In case of scheduled meetings, it is recommended to inform participants in advance about potential video reliability issues and propose alternatives like audio calls or flexible timing. Video functions are usually the first to suffer during internet slowdowns. Additionally, for applications with continuous synchronization, early sign-ins and keeping critical tabs open can help mitigate disruptions. Adequate preparation now can prevent significant inconveniences later.

Surprisingly, a considerable amount of productive work does not necessitate internet access at all. This presents an opportune time to engage in tasks like drafting, report editing, data organization, presentation refinement, budget review, or folder arrangement. These activities, often postponed due to online distractions, become more accessible when internet connectivity is compromised.

Students can also utilize this period effectively by shifting focus from web-based research to revision. Engaging with saved PDFs, annotating notes, solving past exam questions, or preparing study outlines can enhance productivity. For educational videos, downloading content in advance and adjusting resolution settings can ensure smooth access during slower internet periods.

During times of fast internet speeds, digital clutter tends to accumulate unnoticed. However, when faced with slow connectivity, it is advisable to address mundane yet essential tasks such as deleting duplicate files, organizing downloads, renaming documents, tidying up desktops, clearing old screenshots, and restructuring academic or work-related folders. Although not glamorous, this maintenance work can significantly streamline daily activities once regular internet service resumes.

The impact of slow internet extends to family dynamics as well. Children may become frustrated with buffering videos, while adults may feel restless when social media loading times increase. Rather than repeatedly refreshing applications, engaging in alternative activities like board games, drawing, reading, cooking, shelf organizing, or short walks can fill the void more effectively than staring at a frozen screen. For households with children, preparing essential offline entertainment options in advance is advisable, although overreliance on electronic devices should be avoided.

It is crucial to recognize that the disruption stems from planned maintenance on critical infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of proactive planning over mere complaints. The prevalence of fast internet has conditioned us to expect immediate access to information, making a few slow days seem disproportionately frustrating as they illuminate our reliance on speed even for minor tasks. However, this situation also serves as a valuable assessment of genuine internet needs versus habitual online activities.

During this period, individuals in Bangladesh may need to approach work, study, and leisure activities with more deliberate intent. While this adjustment may not be convenient, it presents an opportunity for purposeful engagement rather than being devoid of value.
