Openers Phil Salt and Virat Kohli both reached half-centuries to set the stage for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s 18-run victory over Mumbai Indians in a top-tier IPL match on Sunday. Rajat Patidar’s quickfire 53 off 20 deliveries, combined with Tim David’s unbeaten 34 in the later stages, further bolstered Bengaluru’s innings. Patidar highlighted the team effort, acknowledging the strong start by Kohli and Salt and the valuable contributions from himself and David.
The match featured a showdown between Kohli and Mumbai’s Rohit Sharma, adding star power to the contest. Despite Mumbai’s efforts, Bengaluru managed to restrict them to 222-5, securing their third consecutive win in the tournament.
Salt led the charge for Bengaluru with an aggressive innings, smashing six fours and six sixes. He was recognized as the player of the match for his stellar performance. Kohli provided stability while reaching his second half-century of the season in a composed manner.
Patidar accelerated the scoring with a flurry of sixes, achieving his fifty in just 17 balls after Kohli’s departure. David concluded the innings with a late surge, solidifying Bengaluru’s dominant position.
Mumbai’s innings started positively with Ryan Rickelton’s 37, but faltered when Rohit retired hurt. Suyash Sharma’s double breakthrough further dented Mumbai’s chase, despite Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya’s efforts to revive the innings.
Sherfane Rutherford’s late heroics, including an unbeaten 71 with four sixes in the final over, were not enough to rescue Mumbai from defeat. In the earlier match of the day, Jos Buttler’s impressive half-century guided Gujarat Titans to a convincing seven-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants, with Buttler scoring 60 off 37 balls in a successful chase of 165 runs.
