A woman passed away after allegedly being poisoned by her housemaid during a robbery at a residence in Dhaka’s Uttara Sector 7 this evening. The victim, Ayesha Akhter, aged 62 and a local resident, was identified by Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Kazi Mohammad Rafiq Ahmed.
The victim’s husband, Anwar Hossain, also fell ill from poisoning and is currently receiving medical care at Lubana Hospital in Uttara Sector 13. The incident took place at House 32 on Road 18 in Uttara Sector 7 around 7:45 pm.
Officer-in-Charge Kazi Rafiq informed The Daily Star that the police were alerted through a 999 call reporting an elderly couple found unconscious. A patrol team quickly responded, discovering the victims being transported to a nearby hospital in an ambulance.
Upon arrival at Lubana Hospital, medical staff unfortunately pronounced Ayesha deceased. According to family members, the couple resided in an apartment with their son and daughter-in-law. The family had recently hired a domestic helper named Marufa without full contact details. The son and daughter-in-law had been absent for the past two days, leaving the elderly couple alone.
Authorities suspect that the housemaid laced the couple’s food with a sedative or poison, causing them to lose consciousness before absconding with valuables. The deceased’s body is currently at the hospital morgue, and investigative procedures are in progress, affirmed OC Kazi Rafiq, who noted that legal measures are being pursued.
