Jamaat-e-Islami’s Shafiqur Rahman and Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher have been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition, respectively, in the 13th Parliament. Meanwhile, Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), which is part of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, has been designated as the Opposition Chief Whip in parliament.

Yesterday at 12:23 pm, the newly elected Jamaat members took their oaths as parliamentarians, followed by their oath-taking as members of the Constitution Reform Council at 12:27 pm. The ceremonies took place at the oath room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, where AMM Nasir Uddin, the Chief Election Commissioner, administered the oaths separately. Approximately at 1:00 pm, the NCP elected candidates also took their oaths.

Subsequent to the oath-taking, a meeting was convened by members of the 11-party alliance at the parliament complex. Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, the Jamaat assistant secretary general and head of the central publicity and media department, announced that the decision was made during the meeting.

Shafiqur emerged victorious in the Dhaka-15 constituency, defeating Md Shafiqul Islam Khan of the BNP by 21,614 votes, securing a total of 85,131 votes. In Cumilla-11 (Chouddagram), Taher clinched victory with 133,308 votes under the party’s scales symbol, surpassing Kamrul Huda, the joint general secretary of BNP’s Cumilla South district unit.

Nahid secured the seat in Dhaka-11 with 93,872 votes under the Shapla Koli symbol, surpassing his closest competitor, BNP candidate MA Quayum, who obtained 91,833 votes.
