“Silent Suffering: Uncovering Male Victims of Domestic Violence”

-

I found it difficult to catch my breath, pleading for mercy as my vision blurred. The shattered flower vase lay in fragments nearby, the glint catching my eye. Struggling to steady myself with a gulp of cold air, I was abruptly dragged back to our room by my thick, black hair. Collapsing at their feet, tears and gasps wracked my body.

Confusion filled me as I questioned my fault, met with a harsh reply about being alive without reason. Exhausted and overwhelmed, I couldn’t find the strength to respond, feeling unprepared for the events unfolding on what should have been a special day – our third wedding anniversary.

Memories flooded my mind as I tried to sit up, recalling the best moments we shared from our early days in sixth grade. The love that blossomed between us seemed unbreakable, until a year into our marriage.

Forced to hide my turmoil behind a facade of cheer, I navigated the anniversary party showcasing a content and happy front to the guests, including my unsuspecting mother. The weight of the hidden turmoil beneath my facade was suffocating.

As I descended the staircase, catching sight of the forgotten vase ruins, dread crept in. The impending private confrontation with my wife loomed, and I prayed it would not escalate.

Suddenly, my wife’s intense gaze filled me with terror, signaling her discovery of the vase. With a tightened heart, my only solace was a silent prayer to God for protection from her wrath.

Domestic violence is often associated with women, but the silent suffering of men is overlooked. Male victims, shamed by societal expectations and fear, rarely speak out. It is crucial to acknowledge that abuse affects all genders and no one should endure violence in silence.

To create a safer environment for all in Bangladesh, including women, children, and men, we must recognize and address the reality of domestic abuse regardless of gender. Every voice deserves to be heard, and every victim deserves protection.
