Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in discussions about Iran and other challenging topics on Wednesday with both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Xi emphasized the strengthening of ties with Moscow and advocated for “mutual respect” in relations with Washington.
Following their separate conversations with Xi, both Trump and Putin highlighted their countries’ positive relationships with China, underscoring China’s significant role on the global stage.
However, there were notable differences in the summaries of the two calls. Xi cautioned Trump to handle the sensitive Taiwan issue with care, whereas he and Putin celebrated the enhancement of bilateral relations amid a “turbulent” global environment.
Trump described his dialogue with Xi as “excellent” and emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with China. He expressed satisfaction with the trade discussions, as well as talks on Taiwan, Russia’s actions in Ukraine, and Iran. Additionally, Trump expressed anticipation for an upcoming visit to China, which he stated he eagerly awaits.
