West Indies Resilient in 2nd Test, Trail India by 97

-

The West Indies maintained their wickets after the tea break, closing at 173-2 in the second innings on the third day of the second Test against India. Despite this, they still require 97 runs to force India back to bat. India’s Kuldeep Yadav claimed five wickets at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium as the West Indies were dismissed for 248 in their initial innings, trailing by 270 runs.

Following the follow-on imposed by India’s captain Shubman Gill, the West Indies lost two wickets before tea. However, John Campbell and Shai Hope stood strong post-tea, with Campbell scoring 87 not out and Hope unbeaten at 66, forming an unbroken partnership of 138 runs. Their resilient batting marked the highest partnership for the West Indies in Tests this year.

Campbell achieved a milestone by becoming the first West Indian to reach fifty in the series, hitting a boundary off Kuldeep. Hope reached his fifty off Ravindra Jadeja, receiving applause from the dressing room. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was the first to depart in the second innings, scoring 10 off Mohammed Siraj, while Athanaze fell to Sundar for seven just before tea.

The West Indies started the day at 140-4 in response to India’s 518-5 declared. Kuldeep made early breakthroughs, dismissing Hope for 36 and Imlach for 21. Greaves and Warrican also fell to Kuldeep and Siraj respectively, leaving the West Indies struggling at 175-8. Pierre and Phillip then added 46 runs before Bumrah dismissed Pierre for 23 post-lunch.

Kuldeep claimed his fifth five-wicket haul by trapping Seales lbw for 13. Seales was penalized 25% of his match fee by the International Cricket Council for unsportsmanlike behavior on the first day of the Test. India had previously won the first Test in Ahmedabad by an innings and 140 runs.
