The United Nations announced yesterday that countries’ commitments to reduce carbon emissions indicate only a modest 10% decrease by 2035, highlighting a lack of comprehensive global data due to delayed submissions from most nations. Ahead of the upcoming COP30 climate conference in Brazil, the UN Climate Change agency presented an emissions analysis in conjunction with its evaluation of national 2035 targets. The analysis factored in contributions from major emitters like China and the European Union, despite their incomplete official updates. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently expressed concerns over the slow progress by countries, warning that achieving the goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C would face challenges in the near future, leading to severe consequences before corrective actions can be implemented to stabilize temperatures by the century’s end.
