“UN: Record High Carbon Emissions Demand Urgent Action”

-

The United Nations reported yesterday that the rise in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere last year reached a record high, emphasizing the need for immediate actions to reduce emissions. The UN’s weather and climate agency revealed that in 2024, the concentrations of the primary greenhouse gases – CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide – all experienced unprecedented increases, setting new peak levels. Carbon dioxide levels reached 424 parts per million (ppm), methane at 1,942 parts per billion, and nitrous oxide at 338 parts per billion in 2024, representing significant surges of 152%, 266%, and 125% respectively since the pre-industrial era before 1750. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) highlighted that the 3.5 ppm rise between 2023 and 2024 was the largest annual increase since the commencement of modern measurements in 1957.
