Dozens of United Nations experts raised concerns on Friday regarding key components of the peace proposal for Gaza put forth by US President Donald Trump, citing potential violations of international law and increased hardship for Palestinians.
In a joint statement, 35 independent UN experts expressed apprehensions over multiple facets of the 20-point plan revealed by President Trump and endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While acknowledging positive aspects such as the call for a lasting ceasefire, the prompt release of unlawfully detained individuals, and enhanced humanitarian assistance, the experts criticized several elements that they deemed incompatible with established international legal principles.
Specifically, the experts, led by Francesca Albanese, the special rapporteur on Palestinian rights, emphasized the necessity for any peace initiative to uphold self-determination, accountability, and avoid perpetuating oppressive conditions. They rejected the proposal for a transitional “Board of Peace” overseen by President Trump, drawing parallels to colonial practices that should be dismissed.
Furthermore, the experts contested the idea of an “International Stabilisation Force” that could potentially replace Israeli occupation with a US-led presence, impeding Palestinian self-governance. They raised objections to the plan’s provision for an enduring partial Israeli occupation within Gaza, labeling it unacceptable and concerning.
Criticism was also directed towards the selective focus on de-radicalization efforts in Gaza, neglecting similar issues in Israel and the lack of accountability measures for Israeli actions. The experts highlighted the necessity for justice for victims of international crimes and criticized the perceived unconditional amnesties offered to Hamas while overlooking accountability for Israeli transgressions.
Emphasizing the importance of Palestinian agency in shaping their future, the experts rejected external imposition under coercive circumstances, urging respect for the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.
