“Trump Warns of Tariff Hike on Indian Goods Over Russian Oil Deal”

-

President Trump issued a warning yesterday, expressing his intention to increase tariffs on Indian goods significantly due to India’s substantial purchases of Russian oil, which supports Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine. The move to escalate pressure on India follows Trump’s recent indication of imposing new sanctions on Russia if progress is not made towards a peace agreement with Ukraine by Friday, marking over three years since Russia’s invasion.

In response to the situation, Moscow is preparing for discussions with Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of the US President, who is scheduled to hold talks with President Putin later this week. Trump took to his Truth Social platform to criticize India for buying large quantities of Russian oil and profiting from its resale while disregarding the humanitarian consequences of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Trump’s statement implied a forthcoming increase in tariffs on Indian imports to the US, although specific details on the tariff adjustments were not disclosed. Currently, the existing 10 percent tariff on Indian goods is expected to surge to 25 percent by Thursday.
