“Trump Warns Hamas: Release Hostages or Face Repercussions”

-

US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Hamas on Sunday, urging the Palestinian militant group to agree to a deal for the release of hostages in Gaza. Trump stated that Israel had accepted his terms and emphasized that it was time for Hamas to do the same, cautioning them about the repercussions of non-compliance. This was delivered through a social media post with no further details provided.

In response, Hamas promptly expressed willingness to engage in negotiations, citing suggestions from the American side aimed at securing a ceasefire agreement. Reports from US news outlet Axios revealed that White House envoy Steve Witkoff had recently presented a new proposal to Hamas regarding the Gaza hostage situation and a potential ceasefire.

While specific details of the proposal were not disclosed by the White House, Trump hinted at an imminent announcement, highlighting positive progress in the discussions. He expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations, indicating a potential resolution on Gaza in the near future.

Earlier in March, Trump had issued a similar ultimatum to Hamas, demanding the immediate release of remaining hostages and the return of deceased hostages, warning of severe consequences if his demands were not met.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, an Israeli advocacy group, welcomed Trump’s intervention as a significant breakthrough. The group noted that Hamas had abducted 251 hostages during a major attack on Israel in October 7, 2023, with 47 individuals still believed to be held in Gaza. The Israeli military confirmed the death of 25 hostages and is seeking the return of their remains.

Meanwhile, the statements from Trump and Hamas coincided with intensified military actions in Gaza City by the Israeli army. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a deepening assault on the urban center, leading to the bombing of a residential tower, the third such incident in as many days. The strikes resulted in a significant number of casualties, with reports indicating at least 48 fatalities.

Netanyahu accused Hamas of obstructing evacuations and using civilians as shields, prompting concerns about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. The escalation of violence raised fears for the safety of hostages held in the city, prompting Israeli protesters to demand a reversal of the decision to seize Gaza City.

The October 7, 2023 attack had tragic consequences, claiming the lives of 1,219 individuals, predominantly civilians. In response to Israel’s offensive, the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza reported a significant number of Palestinian casualties, with most being civilians. Independent verification of the tolls and events was hindered by media restrictions and limited access to affected areas.
