US President Donald Trump criticized Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s stance on enforcing federal immigration laws in a recent statement. Trump expressed surprise at Frey’s position, citing a previous positive conversation they had following a tragic incident involving federal agents and two Minneapolis residents. Trump called Frey’s statement a serious violation of the law and warned that he was “playing with fire.”
Following an incident where federal agents shot and killed a nurse during protests in Minneapolis, Trump indicated a willingness to ease tensions in the city. White House officials suggested that US immigration agents may have violated protocol during the events in Minneapolis. Additionally, there was an unsettling incident where a man sprayed Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with an unknown liquid at a town hall meeting, where she criticized the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller mentioned that the administration is reviewing whether Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents followed proper procedures during the shooting of a Minneapolis resident. The Department of Homeland Security reported that two federal officers fired their weapons during the incident.
During a Fox News interview, Trump expressed concerns about Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino’s approach and announced his expected departure from the city. Top US border security official Tom Homan was dispatched to address the situation in Minneapolis.
The escalating situation could lead to a potential government shutdown as Democrats push for significant reforms in federal immigration operations at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Democrats are considering withholding funding approval for DHS as part of the upcoming Senate votes on spending bills later this week.
