US President Donald Trump announced the end of trade discussions with Canada following the utilization of a recorded message from former President Ronald Reagan in a Canadian political advertisement. The ad, featuring Reagan cautioning against the negative impacts of tariffs on trade and economies, was labeled as deceitful by Trump. In response to Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles earlier in the year, Canada had retaliated with trade sanctions. Despite ongoing negotiations between both parties regarding the steel and aluminum sectors, Trump declared the termination of all trade talks with Canada due to what he deemed as unacceptable behavior. The advertisement, released by Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government, had garnered attention from the US President. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation criticized the ad for manipulating Reagan’s remarks without permission, stating that the ad misrepresented the former president’s views on tariffs. Trump’s reliance on tariffs as a negotiating tool has raised concerns among businesses and economists, with the US experiencing its highest tariff levels since the 1930s. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that Canada will protect its markets from unfair US access if trade discussions with Washington fail.
