“Trump and Netanyahu Fail to Secure Iran Deal”

-

President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not reach a conclusive agreement on the way forward with Iran following their discussions on Wednesday. Trump emphasized that negotiations with Tehran will persist to explore the possibility of reaching a deal.

Netanyahu, who was expected to urge Trump to broaden diplomatic efforts with Iran to encompass controls on its missile capabilities in addition to its nuclear activities, underscored the importance of considering Israel’s security concerns. However, there was no indication that the commitments sought by the prime minister were made by the president.

During their seventh meeting since Trump’s return to office, Netanyahu, in a less publicized visit that excluded the press, aimed to influence the upcoming US talks with Iran subsequent to the nuclear discussions in Oman last week.

The two leaders held a lengthy private meeting, lasting over two and a half hours, which Trump characterized as productive, although he clarified that no significant decisions were taken and refrained from publicly endorsing Netanyahu’s requests.

Trump has previously warned of potential military action against Iran if an agreement is not reached, while Iran has pledged to retaliate, escalating concerns of a broader conflict as the US reinforces its presence in the Middle East. Trump has consistently expressed his support for Israel’s security, a key US ally and a longstanding adversary of Iran.

In interviews with the media, Trump restated his direct message to Iran, indicating his belief that Iran is willing to negotiate for a deal.

Following the meeting with Netanyahu, Trump posted on social media stating that no definitive agreement was reached, except for his insistence on continuing negotiations with Iran to explore the possibility of reaching a deal. He mentioned that reaching a deal would be preferable, but if not achievable, the outcome remains uncertain.

Trump also discussed the parameters of a potential deal with Iran, emphasizing the requirement for no nuclear weapons or missiles. Additionally, he mentioned the consideration of deploying a second aircraft carrier strike group as part of a significant US military buildup near Iran.

There are concerns within Israel that the US may pursue a limited nuclear agreement with Iran that does not address Iran’s ballistic missile program or its support for militant groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Israeli officials have cautioned the US against relying on Iran’s assurances.
