In recent years, movies have often portrayed the critical difference between a captured spy and a successful escape as the ability to eliminate evidence swiftly. This theme, commonly depicted in popular films like the Mission Impossible series and various thrillers, showcases the concept of last-minute data destruction as a key element in espionage narratives. Now, an innovative portable SSD is set to bring a touch of cinematic drama into reality, albeit without the cinematic smoke and explosions.
TeamGroup, a prominent Taiwanese hardware manufacturer, has unveiled the T-Create Expert P35S, an SSD that incorporates a feature seldom seen beyond the realm of fictional spy plots: physical self-destruction. Departing from conventional security measures such as encryption or biometric locks, this device includes a specialized mechanism designed to irreversibly damage the storage chips with the simple press of a button, rendering the data permanently inaccessible. TeamGroup labels this process as an “irreversible deletion of all data,” facilitated by a patented destruction circuit.
Unlike the flashy, high-octane gadgetry wielded by iconic characters like James Bond or Jason Bourne, the real-world implementation of the P35S is far more understated. There are no dramatic countdowns or theatrical effects; instead, the SSD quietly self-purges its data from within. To prevent accidental activation of this critical function, TeamGroup has integrated a two-stage sliding switch. Users are required to first push firmly to reveal a red warning marker before applying additional pressure to trigger the final deletion process.
Beyond its unique self-destruct feature, the SSD operates like a conventional high-speed drive, supporting USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity and weighing a mere 42 grams. Available in capacities ranging from 256GB to 2TB, specific pricing and release details for the T-Create Expert P35S are yet to be disclosed by TeamGroup.
