“Swisscontact spearheads regional SME inclusion in Bangladesh’s agro-processing sector”

-

Bangladesh’s agricultural processing industry is experiencing significant growth, producing a diverse range of products with promising prospects both locally and internationally. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in various regions are pivotal to this expansion, providing employment to numerous individuals and bolstering local economies. However, these enterprises encounter various structural obstacles hindering their access to global markets. The majority of trade support and capacity-building initiatives are concentrated in Dhaka, leaving many regional firms without the necessary connections or practical market insights. Moreover, these SMEs often lack clear guidance on export regulations, quality standards, logistics, and compliance, impeding their integration into global supply chains. The lack of consistent mentorship or support systems outside the capital further fragments the ecosystem, resulting in numerous capable regional enterprises being confined to local markets, thereby limiting sector-wide growth and international competitiveness.

In a proactive move, Swisscontact collaborated with CEMS Bangladesh, an affiliate of CEMS Global, to organize the Global Gateway International Agro-Processing Expo in May. This three-day event brought together approximately 300 businesses, offering exhibition spaces, seminars, and panel discussions on export preparedness, standards, certification, and market prospects. International buyers were invited to explore the offerings of Bangladeshi firms, providing participants with practical exposure to global markets.

While the expo effectively supported large companies and SMEs based in Dhaka by enabling them to exhibit products, network with potential buyers, and gain insights into export procedures, a subsequent study by Swisscontact highlighted a significant absence of regional SMEs. This gap underscores the necessity of intentional efforts to involve smaller enterprises from outside the capital to bridge the disconnect from international markets.

Drawing from insights gained at the initial expo, Swisscontact is formulating a more inclusive strategy. Leveraging the partnership with CEMS Bangladesh, the organization is introducing a co-investment model (60:40 cost-sharing) for regional expos. These forthcoming events in cities like Rajshahi, Khulna, and Chattogram will prioritize regional SMEs, retaining a focus on trade facilitation through a combination of exhibitions and practical discussions. The aim is to facilitate direct interactions between smaller producers and potential buyers, equipping them with a better understanding of export prerequisites.

Furthermore, Swisscontact is integrating mentorship and guidance into these regional initiatives. By dispersing trade facilitation efforts and providing hands-on learning opportunities at the regional level, these endeavors aim to enhance the readiness, connectivity, and empowerment of smaller enterprises to venture into international markets. This comprehensive approach is anticipated to cultivate a more inclusive and resilient export environment, benefiting budding SMEs and fortifying Bangladesh’s agricultural processing sector holistically.
