“Sweden’s Ambassador Addresses Human Rights in Bangladesh”

-

Sweden’s Ambassador for Human Rights, Democracy, and Rule of Law, Irina Schoulgin Nyoni, is currently on a visit to Bangladesh from November 11 to 14 to address critical human rights issues such as women’s empowerment, media freedom, and the advancement of democratic principles. The Swedish Embassy in Dhaka announced that during her trip, Nyoni will engage with various stakeholders, including the interim government, civil society organizations, development partners, students, and media personnel.

The Swedish Embassy emphasized that Sweden’s involvement in Bangladesh is driven by a combination of principles and practical actions. Sweden actively supports human rights in the country through development cooperation, political dialogues, and collaborations with civil society groups. Notably, Sweden continues to back initiatives that promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls, focusing on areas like combating gender-based violence, enhancing access to education, and advocating for sexual and reproductive health rights.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted Sweden’s close partnership with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which intensified following OHCHR’s investigation after the July unrest. The investigation led to crucial recommendations for enhancing human rights in Bangladesh, with Sweden actively contributing to their implementation. These efforts include bolstering national institutions, fostering accountability, and supporting civil society organizations.

A significant milestone in this collaboration was the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Bangladesh government and OHCHR in July 2025, establishing the country’s inaugural dedicated OHCHR mission rooted in impartiality, independence, and adherence to the rule of law. With flexible funding from Sweden, OHCHR has been able to sustain its presence and achieve tangible outcomes, including aiding the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, which has recorded close to 2000 cases.

Sweden and OHCHR are jointly engaged in initiatives to promote justice, gender equality, and an inclusive civic environment. This includes backing the National Human Rights Commission, advocating for legal reforms, and empowering youth-led civil society projects.
