Sri Lanka’s Cricket Coach Jayasuriya Contemplates Future

-

Sri Lanka’s head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, is set to hold discussions with team officials regarding his future following the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where the co-hosts faced a disappointing campaign.

The Sri Lankan team failed to progress to the knockout rounds in the ongoing T20 World Cup, suffering a third consecutive defeat in the Super Eights phase against Pakistan. Jayasuriya addressed the media post-match, expressing his intention to engage with the team management to evaluate his position ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

“I felt it was time to pass the baton to someone else,” Jayasuriya stated. “Approximately two months ago, during the England series, I had indicated that I was not optimistic about retaining the role for long. I had made up my mind back then. I had hoped to depart on a positive note as a coach at the World Cup, but unfortunately, that did not pan out as I had envisioned, and that is regrettable.”

The former Sri Lankan captain assumed the coaching role shortly after the 2024 T20 World Cup, despite his contract running until June this year. Sri Lanka had a successful run in the initial group stage of the T20 World Cup, winning three out of four matches. However, setbacks due to injuries to key players Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana disrupted their momentum, leading to three consecutive losses in the Super Eights.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Jayasuriya remarked, “I believe we could have performed better. Playing in Sri Lanka, we had ample opportunities to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, we fell short. Consistency in both batting and bowling departments is crucial for winning matches. Regrettably, our performance was inconsistent, which was our downfall. We need to excel in every aspect consistently.”

Despite the below-par results at this year’s T20 World Cup, Jayasuriya acknowledges the progress achieved during his tenure as coach. “In the past eighteen months, I have been able to elevate the team from a lower ranking in ODIs to No. 4. The Test team has climbed to sixth place, and the T20 team is positioned between sixth and seventh. This progress was a collective effort with invaluable support from my coaching staff. I relied on their expertise as I transitioned from a player to a coach,” he concluded.
