Spain responded to Donald Trump’s remarks yesterday, refuting the suggestion of being expelled from Nato for not meeting the increased defense spending target set by the US President. In June, Nato agreed to raise defense spending significantly to five percent of the annual economic output over the next decade following pressure from Trump. Despite being Nato’s lowest defense spender in relative terms last year, Spain maintained that it does not necessarily have to reach the specified target. Trump singled out Spain as the “laggard” during a press briefing in the Oval Office, implying they should be ejected from the alliance. However, government sources defended Spain’s position on Friday, emphasizing that the country is a dedicated Nato member meeting its capacity commitments comparable to the United States. The Spanish opposition seized the opportunity created by Trump’s comments to criticize Sanchez on Thursday evening.
