Soumya Sarkar’s Unique Batting Style Shines in Recent ODI Series

-

Soumya Sarkar possesses a unique style that distinguishes him from other Bangladeshi batsmen, as evidenced by his impressive performance in the recent ODI series against the West Indies. During the third ODI in Mirpur, Sarkar scored a rapid 91 runs on a challenging pitch. The 32-year-old recently discussed his career, mindset during ups and downs, batting strategy, and changing role within the team with Abdullah Al Mehdi of The Daily Star. Here are some key excerpts from the interview:

The Daily Star (DS): In the third ODI against the Windies in Mirpur, you played aggressively on a demanding pitch. What was your approach?

Soumya Sarkar (SS): It’s not a secret, but my game has evolved gradually. Despite facing challenges against Afghanistan and the West Indies, my process remained consistent. The pitch was tough in the West Indies series, and after early dismissals in the first two matches, I decided to adopt a more attacking approach in the last game.

DS: Despite the unpredictability of the pitch, your shot selection seemed decisive. How did you maintain composure?

SS: Given the challenging conditions, I had to trust my instincts and focus on playing each delivery on its merit.

DS: Was there a specific emphasis on footwork during your innings?

SS: Footwork varies among players, and I preferred not to alter mine. Instead, I concentrated on improving my work ethic, practice routines, and other aspects of my game.

DS: Can you elaborate on the process that led to your success in recent matches?

SS: Scoring runs boosts confidence, which plays a crucial role in performance. Consistency in routines enhances the likelihood of success in every match.

DS: How do you assess success and failure across different formats like ODIs and domestic cricket?

SS: While runs contribute to confidence, each innings presents a new challenge. Establishing a consistent routine increases the chances of achieving success.

DS: Despite your notable ODI performance, you were omitted from the T20I squad. How do you maintain confidence in such situations?

SS: Adapting to the team dynamics and international cricket is a common challenge for all players. It is essential to address shortcomings and make necessary adjustments to succeed.

DS: Do you believe the initial deliveries in a game dictate your performance?

SS: Your routine and adherence to it are critical determinants of success. Building confidence through consistency is key.

DS: How does your recent ODI form impact your upcoming participation in the NCL?

SS: While the NCL has been beneficial for me, transitioning from one-day to red-ball cricket requires additional practice and adherence to established processes. Finding time for preparation is crucial for success in red-ball cricket.

DS: What are your aspirations regarding Test cricket?

SS: I have always aspired to excel in Test cricket. Experience plays a pivotal role in achieving success in this format, and I am eager to contribute positively.

DS: Reflecting on your career, why did you shift focus back to opening batting?

SS: Opening has been my preferred position, and though I continue to bowl, opportunities in that aspect have been limited. Optimal performance as an opener has been my primary focus.

DS: Do you have any regrets about not pursuing a full-time all-rounder role?

SS: Establishing myself as a batsman has been rewarding, and the team dynamics at the time influenced my role as a third seamer. The cricketing landscape has evolved since then.

DS: Despite your performance in the third ODI, you were excluded from the T20I squad. What are your thoughts on this decision?

SS: I remain focused on performing whenever called upon to represent the team.

DS: You previously mentioned that your batch hasn’t transitioned to senior roles despite a decade in cricket. Do you still hold that view?

SS: The presence of senior players like Tamim and Shakib during our tenure prevented us from assuming leadership roles. However, responsibilities within the team are shared among all players, regardless of seniority.

DS: Do you feel a heightened sense of responsibility in the team now?

SS: Certainly, every player in the team carries responsibilities, and I embrace that aspect of being a professional cricketer.
