The son of a judge was attacked by a knife-wielding individual at their residence in the Dabtola area of Rajshahi city today. The alleged assailant, who also sustained injuries, has been apprehended by the police.
The victim, identified as Tawshif Rahman Sumon, 18, is the son of Rajshahi Metropolitan and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 pm on the fifth floor of a building.
Abdul Latif, a resident of the same building, recounted arriving at the scene post the attack. He discovered both the victim and the suspect in a critical condition, with the judge’s wife collapsing upon exiting the residence. Latif swiftly transported all three individuals to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Meser Ali, the building’s caretaker, revealed that the attacker, who identified himself as “Milon” from Shaheb Bazar and claimed to be Judge Abdur Rahman’s sibling, entered the building carrying a bag. Despite the caretaker’s unfamiliarity with the individual, he granted entry based on the false familial connection, recording the name and mobile number for security purposes.
Approximately 30 minutes after the suspect entered the flat, a domestic helper from the residence rushed to inform the caretaker of the violent assault on the judge’s wife and son. Rajshahi Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (CTTC) Gaziur Rahman disclosed the recovery of a sharp weapon, suggesting premeditated intent due to the weapon not being a common kitchen knife.
It was noted that the judge’s family had resided in the building for around eight to nine months. However, the victim’s mother, Tasnim Nahar, expressed concern over an encounter with an individual named Limon during a recent visit to her son-in-law’s residence in Sylhet, leading her to file a General Diary (GD) with Jalalabad Police Station earlier this month.
Medical professionals at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital declared Sumon deceased upon arrival, while his injured mother continues to receive medical care. The alleged assailant is also receiving treatment at the same hospital, as stated by Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian, who anticipates obtaining more information following the suspect’s recovery and subsequent interrogation.
