Shujan Raises Concerns Over Ambitious Election Manifestos

-

Reviewing the election platforms of five political parties, Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) stated yesterday that the manifestos of the two main parties are overly ambitious, lacking financial estimates for their proposed initiatives. This has raised concerns among citizens regarding the feasibility of implementing these promises, the organization emphasized.

Dilip Kumar Sarkar, the chief coordinator of the organization, pointed out that none of the parties has outlined the financial resources needed to fulfill their pledges or how they plan to fund these programs. Speaking at a press conference held at Jatiya National Press Club, he highlighted the lack of clarity in terms of costs and funding sources.

Sarkar specifically mentioned the BNP’s manifesto, citing costly commitments such as generating 10 million jobs, aiming for a one trillion dollar economy by 2035, introducing a family card system for 40 million families, and hiring 100,000 health workers. He expressed concerns about the ambiguity surrounding initiatives like the farmer card and the associated subsidies, emphasizing the need for a clear understanding of the financial implications.

Addressing the tax-to-GDP ratio, Sarkar stressed the necessity of significantly expanding the tax base to support the proposed plans. He also mentioned potential challenges in bringing wealthy individuals into the tax net, as this may face opposition from affluent segments of society.

Commenting on Jamaat’s proposals, Sarkar emphasized the importance of good governance as a fundamental requirement for their successful implementation. He raised doubts about the feasibility of reducing tax rates and increasing public spending simultaneously without effectively combating corruption.

Shujan suggested that by expanding the tax base, promoting meritocracy in government operations, and minimizing losses in state-owned sectors, the manifesto’s implementation could be achievable. The organization highlighted economic security as the key concern for voters, given the prevalent issues of high inflation, unemployment, and income inequality.

The keynote paper noted the varied approaches of the political parties towards development, with BNP advocating a market-based strategy, NCP emphasizing a citizen-centric economy, CPB favoring state control, and Jamaat envisioning a modern, just, and high-growth economy.

Regarding the July National Charter’s implementation, Shujan emphasized its significance in ensuring transparent elections, an accountable government, and the restoration of citizens’ rights. While all parties expressed support for the charter, differences were apparent in their interpretations and utilization of its principles.

Badiul Alam Majumdar, the secretary of Shujan, also shared insights during the event, underscoring the importance of transparent and accountable governance in realizing the parties’ election promises.
