“Shonar Bangla Circus Returns with Double Studio Album”

-

After a substantial hiatus post their 2020 release “Hyena Express,” the independent rock group Shonar Bangla Circus has made a comeback with a double studio album comprising 17 tracks last month. Entitled “Mohashoshan 1” and “Mohashoshan 2,” both albums offer melodious tunes while staying true to the band’s distinctive style – lyrics that challenge, provoke, and encourage deep contemplation. During a discussion at The Daily Star office with three out of the four band members, Probar Ripon, Shakil Haque, and Saad Chowdhury, the conversation delved beyond the albums, touching on the band’s journey in crafting a sound rooted in restlessness. Electric guitarist Seth Panduranga Blumberg, known as Pandu, also contributed to the discussion from his home in California, adding a unique perspective to the dialogue.

Ripon delved into the concept behind the new album and the extensive effort it took to bring it to fruition. “The reason for the nearly three-year gap in creating this album lies in its complexity – with 17 songs and intricate arrangements,” he explained. In contrast to “Hyena Express,” which relied on the traditional rock instruments, “Mohashoshan” explored a broader musical spectrum with a diverse ensemble of instruments and layered sounds like dhol and violin.

Pandu, the guitarist, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the music for the latest albums, drawing inspiration from the rich and vibrant music scene in Bangladesh. Despite facing challenges such as frequent concerts and political unrest, the band persevered, allowing the album to evolve organically over time.

Shonar Bangla Circus stands out from other local bands due to their deliberate departure from conventional Bangladeshi rock norms. Their avant-garde and non-conformist approach, characterized by psychedelic elements, sets them apart. The band members emphasize the collaborative nature of their music, where individual and collective narratives merge to form a unique sonic experience.

Saad, the keyboardist, emphasized the unifying power of music within the band, transcending language barriers. The band’s open-mindedness and freedom in musical expression resonated with him, fostering a deep connection with his bandmates. The longstanding camaraderie among the members, particularly Ripon, Saad, and Pandu, has been instrumental in shaping the band’s musical cohesion.

The band’s music delves into profound themes like life, death, and human suffering, reflecting on universal experiences that transcend borders. Their approach to music is akin to a blank canvas where they pour their emotions, allowing the music to shape their identity as Shonar Bangla Circus.

Ripon’s poignant lyrics aim to challenge listeners, presenting raw truths that may be discomforting yet authentic. The band’s music, often transporting listeners to an introspective realm, prioritizes emotional depth over visual storytelling, reflecting their artistic vision.

While acknowledging the potential of artificial intelligence in the creative realm, the band members underscore the irreplaceable role of human emotion in music creation. They express concerns about the ethical implications of AI-generated content and emphasize the enduring value of human artistry and expression in an increasingly digitized world.

Looking ahead, Shonar Bangla Circus plans to embark on a solo tour titled “Mohashoshan Jatra,” aiming to connect with audiences nationally and internationally. Despite challenges like unequal royalty rates and technological advancements, the band remains committed to sharing their music authentically and passionately with audiences worldwide.
